Same-Sex Marriage License Applications Available for NYC Couples

07/05/20011, by Melanie Nathan

As of today the New York Times reports that the marriage license application form, in the City of New York,  still asks for the “groom info” and “bride info.”  However that is not likely to stop a whopping $140 million dollar surge (estimated) for the City as it braces for the 24th July, the first day that same-sex couples will be permitted under the new Marriage Equality Act, to marry in New York.

However as applications for licenses started today, a spokesperson for the City Council said that the wording will be fixed immediately.

On June 24, 2011, the New York State Legislature passed the Marriage Equality Act which was signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo the same day.  This new law will take effect on July 24, 2011.  The New York City Clerk will then begin issuing marriage licenses and providing civil marriage ceremonies to same-sex couples.   State law generally requires couples to wait 24 hours after receiving a license before they can be married.  Please visit this page in the coming days for further updates.

The City Clerk’s office has said that they are prepared to extend their hours and provide more judges to perform marriage ceremonies for the historic the first day that the new law permitting same sex marriage comes into effect.

Applications for a New York City marriage license can be submitted online at the City Clerk’s website.

If both you and your prospective spouse are 18 years old or older, you can fill out this form to submit your Marriage License application to the Office of the City Clerk online. Upon submitting this online Marriage License application, you will receive a Confirmation Number. To complete your application, you and your prospective spouse must bring your Confirmation Number along with your payment, proper identification, and any additional required documentation to the Office of the City Clerk.
