Pat Buchanan calls for new era of civil disobedience in response to UN’s calls for equality

Is this a tacit call to violence?

By Cathy Kristofferson, April 17, 2013

moon_hrsogiYesterday was day two of the United Nations International Conference on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.  A conference at which Ban Ki Moon, its Secretary General, said: “Religion and culture cannot justify discrimination against gays and lesbians“.

Pat-BuchananAlso yesterday, Pat Buchanan penned a piece at WND titled, ‘Is Civil-Disobedience on ‘Marriage’ Imminent?  Buchanan sees millions of Christians refusing to “obey new same-sex laws” in which he predicts “a public rejection of the new laws by millions and a refusal by many to respect or obey them.”

A rejection he compared to those who consumed alcohol during Prohibition (!).  A rejection we can see may already be happening.  A rejection, for Buchanan, which will go on in perpetuity apparently as he states: “For traditional Christianity’s view that homosexual acts are immoral and same-sex marriage an absurdity cannot be reconciled with the view that homosexuality is natural and normal and gay marriage a human right.”

Tweets and posts about Buchanan’s current threat of an escalation of such rejection seems somewhat crazed because it is housed in his usual racist, anti-semetic, anti-gay rants –  who knows what mayhem his rhetoric could cause?  And, hey, I live in Massachusetts and actually we are not taking calls for potential violence too lightly at the moment.

So, what exactly is Pat suggesting when he says:

“The culture war in America today may be seen as squabbles in a day-care center compared to what is coming. A new era of civil disobedience may be at hand.”

Abortion-graphic-602-2

We know what the culture war still raging against abortion causes – abortion doctors murdered, abortion clinics burned, as well as unconstitutional anti-abortion laws brought up and many actually legislated.

And what will the laws bringing equality to our country, and the international treaties we’ve signed, mean at that point?  Will the United Nations forces in powder blue berets be arriving on our shores to protect the human rights as guaranteed the LGBTI community in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

And I see gulags full of right wing recalcitrant people who cannot, or will not obey the law of the land. They will be remembered for injustice, inequality, and hatred, all in the name of their ‘god,’ certainly not the Christian God we all espouse. So be it.

Unbelievable, right?? This man is almost calling the mob to arms!!! SMH!!!

It would be most appropriate if Ms. Buchanan and his cohorts experience a face-to-face meeting with their local FEMA camp/gulag! That may cool the fire in their britches for having any kind of insurrection!

How would one go about this civil disobedience to gay marriage? Should the opponents of gay marriage, if these laws take effect, not participate in gay marriage? I’m unclear. Maybe someone could shed some light on this for me.

It is not civil disobedience to just gay marriage he is calling for, it is to ‘homosexual rights”. If you would like an example just look at the Missouri man who was arrested at his husband’s hospital bedside for a way to disobey laws granting gays equal rights. Other simple ways could be to disobey state and/or city ordinances providing equal rights to employment and housing so employers and landlords can participate in Pat’s call for civil disobedience by firing and evicting everyone they suspect to be gay. Get it?

Cathy, no sorry I don not get it. I’ve always seen civil disobedience opposing unjust laws, such as those during the civil rights eras against blacks. But actively pulling two people away from each other when one person is dying, causing them more heartache, or firing someone for being a certain way, or kicking them out of a residence because of the same…thats hatred, bigotry and discrimination. Civil disobedience to these kinds of things are to just not participate, in my opinion. Don’t like the law where gays can get married? Don’t get a gay marriage. Don’t like that gays can work where you work? Get a job somewhere where they can’t. Thats true civil disobedience.

Well, I’m sure it doesn’t much matter what you or I see as true civil disobedience. Buchanan’s article states “Imagine the situation in America today if priests and pastors were telling congregations they need not obey civil rights laws.” And that is what he goes on to suggest – “a public rejection of the new laws by millions and a refusal by many to respect or obey them.” Time will only tell how many millions accept his challenge.
