South Africa Trial of 2 Men Accused of Raping Lesbian

The guise of so called “corrective” rape against lesbians are hate attacks by men who believe woman are there for their use!

The trial of two men accused of raping a lesbian, to supposedly “correct” her sexual orientation commenced in the South African city of Port Elizabeth, Wednesday.

The Port Elizabeth High Court heard testimony from a witness who was with the men at the time, Thabizolo Nodada. He described how four men – Sonwabo Ngcete (20), Khuselo Manta (22), Siyamthanda Ndiza (21) and Siyabonga Mahlangu (21) – allegedly attacked the unnamed woman in the early hours of the morning on 29 January 2012.

The Sowetan reports that the woman was raped in the Eastern Cape township of Kwazakhele:’

Nodada told the court that, as the woman, known to be lesbian, approached the men, Ngcete said to the others: “Here is a child that acts like a boy but I am going to show her that she is a woman.”Nodada and a friend, who were walking nearby, then watched as the men chased the woman and held her down.

After arguing about who would rape her first, the woman was allegedly raped by two of the suspects, Ngcete and Manta, for almost half an hour. Before the other two men could further violate their victim, they were scared away by a woman in a neighbouring house who shouted at them.

Only then did Nodada, who said he feared for his own safety, and his friend help the victim. Ngcete and Manta have been charged with rape while the other two men have been charged with conspiring to rape. All four are also facing robbery charges.

Mambaonline Reports:

The attack on the woman appears to be an incident of so-called “corrective rape”, in which someone perceived to be gay is raped to “teach” them to behave or present themselves according to sexual and gender norms. The attacks, usually in South Africa’s townships, often include the torture, mutilation or murder of the victim.

Earlier this month, President Jacob Zuma condemned violent crimes against members of the LGBTI community. “These attacks are despicable and they must be stopped,” he said at the 103rd anniversary of the ANC in Cape Town.

In April last year, the South African government launched Africa’s first state-led campaign to combat discrimination and violence against LGBTI people, including a rapid response team targeting hate crime incidents. Its success remains to be seen.

So called “corrective rape” has been endemic in South African townships for many years. In March 2011 I was a spokesperson at the meeting that launched the South African Government / stakeholder Task Team initiative. It is clear that the government has much more to do to effect reform and reach men in communities who seem to think that a person’s sexuality can be changed by a violent act. Or do they really? It is my belief that such attacks, under the guise of so called “correction” are hate attacks by men who think woman are there to be “used” for their sexual purposes. And if women are not in compliance, such as lesbians, to this way of thinking, should be forced! South Africa, with its fully inclusive Constitution – still has a long way to go! READ MORE
