Wow Melanie, what an interesting subject. I just had the luxury of being able to spend two hours studying. To your question. Yes, the US is breaching promises they made to the citizenship. In fact, every country that signed is not living up to the promises they made. I made notes on many of the articles listed in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. So much food for thought, here is my list.

Article Two."....everyone is entitled to all the rights......without distinction of any kind.....no distinction of international status." Geees, where to begin. LGBT individuals do not have all rights. Marriage, tax law, and all the other 1100 rights given within a federal marriage. In addition, "... the right to be here, with no distinction of international status." If my Husband to be, were a girl, we would of been married ten years ago. I would call that a breach of the agreement!

Article Seven "....equal protection against any discrimination...." Breach? Ask anyone fired simply because they are gay. Including myself. Ask a family member of one of the guys killed in NYC during the last weeks. I could go on and on.

Article 12 "....no one....subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy....family home.." Ever felt uncomfortable because the neighbors dislike everything about your, born that way orientation? How about the ladies in Texas having the kids taken away because they are together? Were you lucky or unlucky with the mortgage people when you bought a home together?

Article Fifteen ".....no one deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality." The US has breached my boyfriend's human rights, therefore mine as well!

Article Twenty-three, twenty-four and twenty-five. All deal with working conditions, right to choose ones work, no one subjected to discrimination, reasonable hours, paid holidays and the right to fair standards of living and well being. Do LGBT individuals every experience discrimination at work? Do we have paid leave when we adopt or have a baby? Is it a law that no employer can fire me because I am gay? Breach, Breach, Breach!

Don't even get me started on the rest of the world. I was thinking back to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I feel we should of been included in that protected class. If only LBJ had had a lesbian daughter. However, in 1964 gays were considered mentally ill. Took another ten years for that to change. I was alive in 64 and 74 and I can report I didn't notice a big change. So onto ending DOMA. Passing ENDA. Fighting to be included in the new immigration bill. And as I always say, if you aren't out of the closet.....well, how can anyone begin to know you.

***I dedicate this review to my Husband to be, Manilou. Also, to my friend Hassan. In 1963 he came from Sudan to train with my Father, a soils engineer. I was five, my Sister three. Both of us remember rolling on the floor with him and bouncing on his knee. Night after night before and after dinner. He would hug us goodbye and Dad would take him to his motel in our little ND town. Years later, I was sleeping in my Grandparents guest room adjacent their bedroom. We always enjoyed their bedtime conversations. Loudly they spoke of anything and everything as they fell asleep. Grandma reminded Grandpa, "remember that nice young man that Bob trained back when Rodney(me) was a tot? Remember that night Bob took him to his room and he found a rattlesnake in his bed!" Breach, you bet USA!
