Women March in Egypt at Great Risk

by Melanie Nathan, Dec 20, 2011

I believe what I am seeing in the video below is a march of women in the streets of Egypt, presumably Cairo. I could be wrong.  I am having the marching chant translated at the time of posting and will update. In the meantime what I am getting is the bravery of women who are marching for their rights in a country where they have none.

What I find interesting about the Video is the allegiance of the men who seem to be supporting the woman with human chain, thereby entitling them to their march, supportive and protective.   While some in western feminist mode might find this paternalistic attempt at protection offensive, I find it endearing, given the region, the times and context.

It actually gives me hope….. but it is the marchers who should feel empowered and hopeful….
