South African Pastor Blames Mine Massacre on Gays

Errol Naidoo’s blame on gays will not fall well!

A conservative Christian minister in South Africa has taken a leaf out of the book of U.S. deceased Evangelical Jerry Falwell and  blamed the horrific massacre of South African Miners by police witnessed last week at the Marikana platinum mine on feminists, homosexuals and abortion. Controversial pastor Errol Naidoo trended briefly on Twitter on Wednesday, after publishing a newsletter from the Family Policy Institute, which blamed “abortion-on-demand”, driven by radical feminists and the “homosexual agenda” for a “culture of death” in South Africa.

Thirty-four people were killed and 78 wounded at the mine following clashes between police and mine-workers demanding higher pay and safer work conditions. The killings sparked outrage across the country, with some South Africans comparing it to the type of state-sponsored murders of anti-apartheid activists in decades past.

While some South African reports indicate this as a novel approach, they are misinformed. There is nothing novel about scape-goating minorities by religious zealots and political extremists. What is more important to note is that Naidoo has admitted to being hosted by known classified Hate Group, The Family Research Council, while in D.C. in the U.S.A.

To quote renowned American openly gay clergyman and author, Mel White , who used to be Jerry Falwell’s ghostwriter ,  “Unfortunately most of these same religious leaders believe their anti-gay rhetoric. They do not know most of what they say about us is untrue. Nor do they realize the tragic consequences of their untruths.” (Unholy Terror, Preface)

White goes on to note: ” In fact they are using their anti-homosexual campaign to recruit volunteers, raise funds, mobilize volunteers, and eventually divide and conquer the nation. Their ultimate goal is to break down the wall that separates church and state, superimpose their “moral values” on the US Constitution, replace democracy with theocratic rule and create a new Christian America.”

I would say that Pastor Errol Naidoo is doing just that  – nothing new when it comes to fear driven politics and the fundamentalist dream to destroy freedoms in the name of Church.  Yes, Naidoo can pray and have his Church and his religious freedoms will not be interrupted, but in so doing, for him to attack the freedom’s of others, is a grand assault on South Africa and the Constitutional rights of all. What he has said is as UN-South African as one can get and no one should be silent.

Boitshoko Machwusa tweeted that Naidoo was “taking the opportunity to spread bigotry”, while  Journalist Mandy de Waal commented: “When I read [the newsletter] I become more convinced that strains of religion are akin to a virus that destroys rationality.”

Currently South Africa’s Constitution is under attack by traditional leaders in Parliament who would like to see the sexual orientation and gender identity equality clause removed.   Not only does Naidoo’s rhetoric support such notion, but it also provides a call to violence – a form of justification for homophobic attacks on the LGBTI community in South Africa, where such is already rampant.   Where is the boundary between religious and hate talk?  There seems to be none in the book of Naidoo!

AS an aside – it seems that Mel White is spot on about motivation – financial gain – for conservative Christian values – we instill fear – they give us gifts! Here is a picture taken off Naidoo’s Facebook page where he is receiving a free gift of a JAG XJ6 a very expensive and fancy car by South African Standards.  Equivalent to about R100,000 in value. By USA standards it would probably be similar to receiving a $100,000 gift (not based on exchange rate – but value.)

Post script:- “Arlene and I at the awesome Values Voter Summit in Washington DC hosted by Family Research Council. The Summit is the largest and most prominent gathering of pro-life, pro-family leaders in the US.” Quote from Errol Naidoo –

Naidoo speaking in DC at Hate Group event

He has been associating with known classified as Hate Groups.  The Family Research Council is classified as such because it falls into the category of disseminating lies about LGBT people.   http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/08/21/human-rights-campaign-family-research-council-is-a-hate-group/  .

    Yeah, I’m sure he loved the idea of a woman filling the tank & then washing his car- as a “good” woman does, right? Satisfy yo’ man!

    He’s a sickening excuse for a human being. But you know how it goes? Men who are afraid, use fear to control others. When they sense their little patriarchal-kingdom-on-earth being challenged- you bet things can get nasty.

    Imagine his response to the LGBT community? Gender roles are not a command performance. Women don’t necessarily want a male partner, men can remain being male- even when they are partnered with a man,…Naidoo’s head must spin when he contemplates having to change his own linens! “Why, that’s a woman’s job!!!”.

    Worse, are the positive comments to his “gift” (pay-off) from WOMEN! Talk about your Stockholm Syndrome poster-children. A bunch of codependent satellites orbiting a giant narcissistic psychopath.

    Blame the homosexual agenda? And what is our “agenda”? Its not like we’re scheming to march to that guys house to shoot him with glitter guns while chanting Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”. This guy epitomises the word half-wit.

      I am gay – a lesbian – and yes I DO have an agenda and here it is:

      1. Equality for all LGBTQI people worldwide;
      2. Decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide;
      3. Educate so people understand what being LGBTI means – the science – not the quackery
      4. Maintain separation of religion and secular when it comes to LGBTI rights –
      5. Rid the world of their fear of Gays – i.e. homophobia

      DAMN RIGHT I have an Agenda – and guess what our Agenda hurts no one – its asks for freedom – peace – and happiness – and allows the religious to continue to have their Churches, Synagogues, Mosques, temples etc…. just leave our civil law alone!

      The problem with people like this Pastor is they hide their hate behind the Bible and so when you go after them they cite their fear of religious oppression – like yiu are trying to take away their religious freedoms. But what they do not realize when they cry foul is the fact that NO ONE is stopping them from praying and no one is stopping them from having their Churches. However what we are trying to stop is them using their Churches to p[reach hate outside of their churches. I truly hope that someone in SA will report this piece to the Human Rights Commission and that Naidoo is cited for preaching hate outside the Church and into the Tweetmosphere where in essence he inciting violence against gays. Thanks David for spreading this around, your comment and your proactive approach to getting this injustice to the right place.
