Norwood – South African press is reporting that a University of Johannesburg professor of law, might be the ninth victim in a series of serial murders of gay men.
The latest victim is Dr Carl Mischke, 47, whose body was discovered on Monday morning, laying on his bed, face down, in a pool of blood. He had multiple stab wounds, according to the reports. (Eyewitness News.)
Police confirmed that the Norwood man’s death would be investigated as part of the hunt for the serial killer or killers. Police have described the killings as the work of a gang operating in Gauteng and Cape Town. They say the gang allegedly obtains the trust of their victims who allow them into their homes. It is believed that the victims may meet the murderers over the internet.
Mischke lived just a few streets away from another victim, Barney van Heerden. (http://oblogdeeoblogda.me/2013/04/18/trial-date-set-for-3-accused-in-murder-of-south-african-gay-man/)
Police have arrested three suspected members of the gang in the murder of Van Heerden, but this does not seem to have thwarted the gang. Police have also linked similar murders in Cape Town.
This could also be a copycat modus operandi.
It has taken the police well over a year to admit that this might be the work of serial killer or more than one person acting together in these targeted crimes. Gay men are urged to use extreme caution when allowing anyone into their homes. In the past cases often laptops and other such items are missing from the home of the victims.
UPDATE: A 29 year old man was arrested in Kempton park, wearing clothes taken from the home of Carl Mischke – see report
UPDATE 4/21/2013. A second man has been arrested in this case” Second man arrested in connection with UJ Prof’s murder – A second man accused of killing University of Johannesburg lecturer Carl Mischke has been arrested, Gauteng police said on Sunday. See report
