NOM outraged by David Boies giving commencement speech at NYU

“How would you feel if your own college graduation ceremony was being used as a same-sex marriage publicity stunt?” NOM

By Melanie Nathan, April 26, 2013.

Screen Shot 2013-04-26 at 4.51.48 PMGuess who I got this news from – I mean the news that David Boies is giving the Commencement speech at NYU?  I got the news on my feed from NOM (the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage) – they are up in arms about anything and everything to do with same-sex marriage and our freedom to pursue our lives in happiness…. and yes G-d forbid equal rights.

The news they are fretting over is here is this objective report from DNAinfo ?

“MANHATTAN — NYU graduates getting ready to head into the real world next month will get a sendoff from one of the leading legal pioneers in the fight to legalize gay marriage.

David Boies, the attorney arguing in the Supreme Court against the California anti-gay marriage amendment Proposition 8, will be NYU’s commencement speaker at the Yankee Stadium ceremony on May 22, the university announced Tuesday morning.

An NYU School of Law alumni, Boies will be honored along with New Yorker Edith Windsor, whose challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act is also being heard by the nation’s highest court.

Boies will receive an honorary doctorate in law. Filmmaker Oliver Stone, National Museum of Afghanistan director Omara Khan Masoudi and genome scientist Claire Marie Fraser will receive honorary degrees as well, NYU announced. And what could their spin possible be? Hard to imagine:- Well here is their title (header) to their post :

“Outrageous: NYU to Use Commencement Ceremonies as Same-Sex Marriage Publicity Stunt”

And the article that follows …seems as if it fails to follow the header – but nonetheless at the risk of repeitition:

“A report on NYU’s upcoming commencement reveals that the honorees will include two same-sex marriage activists:

David Boies, the attorney arguing in the Supreme Court against the California anti-gay marriage amendment Proposition 8, will be NYU’s commencement speaker at the Yankee Stadium ceremony on May 22, the university announced Tuesday morning.

An NYU School of Law alumni, Boies will be honored along with New Yorker Edith Windsor, whose challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act is also being heard by the nation’s highest court.

Boies will receive an honorary doctorate, and Windsor an unspecified award”  (END OF NOM SPIN!)

I mean really I don’t see any Outrage expressed – perhaps they forgot. What did they think the Title would make the case? No wonder they are such losers. But thanks for the tip and the chuckle.

AH and of course  lest we forget the readers as comments as appeared on NOM’s BLOG – uhuh …all 20 of them:-

Brian’s just jealous that they’re getting an honorary degree from a real university

Calling David Boies an “activist” is a bit of a stretch.

Boies is an alum of NYU law. How is this an outrage?

Its a full court press to get as much media attention to make SS -“M” … seem vouge while the Judges “deliberate”

Same with the push for the legislation in the States.. its a sad situation but our countries judicial system looks more like the high school popularity contest than anything resembling sustained legal thought.

@Jeanette – more like a supporter of the radical gay agenda that intends to silent those of us who oppose your agenda.

NYU must recognize the monumental impact David Boise and Edie Windsor have made in the march to equality. That Boise is a graduate of NYU certainly shines a bright spot on NYU. Edie Windsor is just a wonderful, gracious women who lost both her wife and her wealth to arcane and soon to be abolished federal laws of inequality. It will be a day of celebration for NYU.

Was it a “publicity stunt” when Brian Brown accepted an “honorary doctorate” from “American Urban University”, which as far as anybody can tell doesn’t even exist?

    JOHN B. & CHRIS:

Yeah, Brian Brown’s “Honorary Doctorate” from “American Urban University” does seem a bit ODD, does it not? A school that has no website, no campus, no student body, NOTHING. This “Honorary Doctorate” must be made of “Pure Imagination” as Willy Wonka would say.

The symbolism is purely political and this awards have zilch to do with substantive merit in terms of contributions to society.

Their part in the attack on the marriage idea is actually a very dark stain on the public role each has played today.

Thankfully I graduated from a Jesuit University which would never have allowed such a stunt!:)

    P. Edward. I beg to differ. I graduated from a Jesuit secondary school nearly 35 years ago. Even back then the school was very welcoming of gay people. Today, the school is even more welcoming.

Here is an interesting Jesuit response to a modern day issue. It makes me proud to call myself a Catholic in the Jesuit tradition.

Proposition 8 does not, contrary to Judge Vaughan Walker’s claims, treat equals unequally.

Dear bobby-poo: I suspect your statements “I graduated from a Jesuit secondary school nearly 35 years ago. Even back then the school was very welcoming of gay people. Today, the school is even more welcoming” are – how shall I put it? – something less than truthful. Now, be a good little leftie and haul that keyster over to Moveon.

OKB – I am a political moderate. I believe in free markets, private ownership and conservative fiscal policies. I also believe in equality. My Jesuit alma mater has a gay alumni group and lists same sex weddings for gay alumni just as it lists opposite sex weddings for heterosexual alumni in its alumni magazine. I think I know the school much better than you do.

Bobby – SS”M” has NOTHING to do with equality. It is ALLL about advancing the gay lifestyle as normal and homosexual acts as equal to actual sexual intercourse (which of course it is NOT). BTW: your Jesuit education is unworthy of being called Catholic because they clearly failed to teach you what and why the Church teaches that sex is a sacred act between a husband and wife that must remain open to children.

Tim – Allowing same sex marriage has everything to do with equality. My Jesuit education was 2nd to none.

OKB, NOM is trying to maintain the pretense that they are not anti-gay. The stuff some (not all) supporters say makes it hard for them to do that with any credibility. Why don’t your take your paranoid self over to Free Republic or WorldNet Daily. You’ll have plenty of company there.

Still chuckling – thanks NOM for the tip on my feed and thanks as always for the chuckles!

Seriously, Melanie? Surely you realize the bad, very bad, week NOM has had. They are bound to be a bit cranky. Do you really need to pile on? I mean a big marriage equality win for France after NOM personally trained and funded the opposition with Brian Brown bragging so in the end all for naught, and then advances here in Nevada and Delaware, and now Rhode Island a done deal.

Even Brian Camenker at MassResistance is criticizing them: “We admire a lot of what the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) does for marriage across the country. But unfortunately in this fight they were clueless and ineffective.” Ouch.

But “clueless and ineffective” seems to be what you are saying too! Hahaha!!! Pile on. Couldn’t happen to better group of haters. Just sad Maggie’s not around to share in the fail.

Perhaps we could redirect their goals by changing a few little … NOM- Numbskulls/Numbnuts On the Move =NOtM??!! Sounds easy to me, and NOM might not even realize the difference! But, yes, they have not had a stellar week or month! June doesn’t look too promising for them either.

    • dakotahgeo April 26, 2013 at 6:40 PM #

NOM never ceases to amaze and amuse me. With the bad week/month they have experienced, maybe it would be better if we just retitled them NOtM… Neanderthals On t’ March!?? 10 to 1 they would never notice it and I think they will be very surprised in June when DOMA and Prop 8 falls. Maybe that will doom them to extinction once and for all.

      • Melanie Nathan April 26, 2013 at 9:14 PM #

DOMA will fall and Prop 8 will probably rule no standing which will also mean marriages in CA . So yes hahahah Nom!

        • Dakotahgeo April 26, 2013 at 9:55 PM #

Mmmmmmm, yes. I failed to make that clear. Thanks!! :-)

Am I the only one sick to death of that “gay agenda” drivel? It’s trotted out, non-stop, by the right-wingers & is a completely paranoid lie used to undermine the advancement of equality for all!

I, for one, am tired of the actual “hetero-agenda” that’s been shoved down MY throat for my entire 52 years & counting. Tired of being judged & being forced to fit someone else’s screwed up version of reality & religious dogma which is NOT mine.

It’s time to step off of the bus, NOM- Your ride is over!

    • Melanie Nathan April 27, 2013 at 12:23 PM #

Well as an activist I have always had an agenda – EQUALITY- I think its kinda fair to have that as an agenda! But u right NOM et al are over rhetorized

      • dakotahgeo April 27, 2013 at 1:14 PM #

Right on, Melanie! NOM is like a really, really bad 60’s R&R song, played over and over and over again, ad nauseum!

  3. Rod April 26, 2013 at 11:10 PM #

David Boies is one of my heros! Nom is sounding like he muscled his way into giving the commencement speech…..give me a break! David Boies deserves every accolade he receives and more. And, he won the Bush, Gore, Florida case in my opinion. That election was stolen from Al Gore. David Boies will give a great speech at NYU. Would love to hear it.
