Transphobia murders endemic in Turkey

Dora-OzerTuesday, Dora Özer was found stabbed to death in her home by her roommate.  Dora, only 24, is the latest victim of the rampant transphobia  in Turkey.  According to Transgender Europe, at least 30 transgender individuals were murdered in Turkey between January 2008 and December 2012.

Turkey ranks second in the world for crimes against transgender people.  And still the government refuses to take action.  Only Turkey’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) tackles LGBT rights in Turkey but as we have reported here on OBLOGDEE they have met nothing but resistance.

Turkey currently has no protections for sexual orientation or gender identity in their civil rights laws and no hate crimes legislation against anti-LGBTI crimes of hate.

lgbtt_transTomorrow at 6pm coordinated actions will be held across Turkey, in cities including Adana, Ankara, Berlin, Diyarbakir, Eskişehir, İstanbul and İzmir. In İstanbul the march will start from Galatasaray Square and end at to Taksim Square the site of the Gezi uprising.  The road to Taksim Gezi Park is also the site of  Trans and Gay Pride Parades.  Tomorrow’s marchers will condemn Turkey’s transphobia and resulting crimes of hate.  They will protest the government’s inaction and demand justice for Dora.

O my God, how long must this barbaric behavior continue? My soul weeps for Dora and others who have not been accepted for simply being themselves. I send you prayers and love, Sweet Girl…
