It seems that Spain has agreed to participate in the Russian discrimination of same-sex couples. The Spanish government has caved in to Russia’s demands and signed on to a bilateral agreement that would allow Spanish couples to adopt Russian children by guaranteeing that none of the children could be placed with same-sex couples.
This surprising and quiet move just before Christmas left human rights activists speechless. No wide Western media coverage has been provided either.
Spectrum Human Rights, based in D.C., is planning to send an official request to the Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC for comments. Please stay tuned.
Upon reading the Spanish press it seems that Putin held the Spanish government hostage to the fact that there were 500 couples waiting to complete their adoption process. While this may serve those families and those children, the bigger picture is that Russia’s orphans will suffer in the long run, as this form of blackmail, which Spain has now succumbed to, only empowers Putin and his rhetoric that gays are not fit parents. Unfortunately Spain is now on the record as tacitly participating in such statement.

This decision by Spain to declare in accord with Russia that LGBT are unfit to be parents should of course be challenged, and the officials who signed out called out on their reasoning. I can only hope any such challenge is public, in print media as well as on radio and on television with enough air time allowed to adduce the mountains of peer reviewed empirical research, which conclusively show that Russia’s fear mongering has no place in a civilised world.

Probably, this is not a question of yielding to Russian blackmail, but of the homophobic far Right Spanish “Partido Popular” government doing this willingly.
