By Cathy Kristofferson, May 07, 2013 Today began the four day constitutionality challenge trial of Belize’s Section 53 anti-sodomy law in their Supreme Court. I have been watching the #UNIBAM twitter feed all afternoon (Belize = CST) for wonderful live-tweeting from Asa DeMatteo and now have been emailed (thank you!) the Press Release for Day One. […]
Getting rid of the old British Colonial penal code criminalizing homosexuality in Central America… By Cathy Kristofferson, May 05, 2013 The nation of Belize, bordered by Mexico and Guatemala, is the last country in Central America where homosexual acts are still illegal and punishable by long prison terms. But that could change for Belize and set […]
National Day of Prayer to be headed by pastor who thinks marriage equality is a Satanic ploy… By Cathy Kristofferson, April 30, 2013 President Obama just, just!, held a press conference where he remarked that “the LGBT community deserves full equality, not just partial equality, not just tolerance, but a recognition that they’re fully a […]
By Cathy Kristofferson, April 29, 2013 Here on this BLOG Thursday, we reported that directly preceding the introduction of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) of 2013, a press release came out expressing “very grave concerns” about the religious exemption clause contained in the Bill. The American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal, the National Center for […]
Employment protections bill introduced for the 20th time… but will expanded religious exemptions doom ENDA before it’s even reintroduced? By Cathy Kristofferson, April 25, 2013 The 2013 version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) will be introduced into Congress today by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) in the Senate and Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) in the […]

[…]
By Melanie Nathan, April 11, 2013. Further to our report about the lowering of rainbow flags to half mast in the Netherlands and protests against Russian PM Vladimir Putin, on April 08, the Dutch LGBT community and allies turned out by the thousands to protest Putin’s proposed anti-gay propaganda law in Russia. On stage performers […]
$11 million, four-year initiative to further LGBT equality worldwide By Cathy Kristofferson, April 08, 2013 Following the United Nations’ historic resolution endorsing LGBT human rights in 2011, President Obama issued a mandate to all agencies involved with foreign aid and development to “enhance their ongoing efforts with governments, citizens, civil society, and the private sector […]
Gay icon, or just a supporter of ‘individual liberty’? By Cathy Kristofferson, April 08, 2013 The BBC is reporting that The Iron Lady ex-Prime Minister Lady Margaret Thatcher has died. Thatcher, a staunch conservative, supported the decriminalization of homosexuality back in 1967. As PM her government later legalized homosexuality in both Scotland and Northern […]
Now while we abroad are screaming foul on behalf of the local LGBTI coalitions and community, we may well be playing into Bahati’s hands on a local level, as he has so much internal support we may actually be serving to enhance the unity. Yet I do believe still this could backfire as the more intelligent and less ambitious start to realize that this is nothing but the political aspirations of one man using an entire community to meet his needs. Maybe just maybe some local brave hero will expose him! Someone who is not afraid to display intellect and speak truth.
Today a Binational married lesbian couple (names private) attended Senator Gillibrand’s meet and greet at the LGBT Center in NYC. They went armed with a letter setting out their dire circumstances, including reference to the unconscionable detention suffered by one of the spouses.
“Hun, we live in a world where peoples are often so full of fear which is usually because of ignorance, – there are all sorts of different families – but they have usually only experienced their own. The unknown teririfies them; so they lash out in this way. What you heard on that ad, was unfair and contorted, but that is how the people who are against the idea of same-sex marriage think they can get other people to join their way of thinking.”
I provided more reassurance as best I could. A few more questions and answers later we arrived at school, and went on with the next two weeks, during which time HC and my four year old accompanied me to various “NO ON 8” rallies; “no on 8, no on 8,” a battle cry still performed by my 4 year old whenever she sees the number 8, whether in the market, at school or in the movies.
This is what we need to see more of – We should urge all those who voted for DOMA to now co-sponsor its repeal under the new Respect for Marriage Act introduced this week by Rep. Jerrold Nadler. Proudly changing my position on DOMA (Rep. Earl Blumenauer By Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) […]
Melanie Nathan: I sent my twelve year old off to school today hoping that her first class period would run the President’s speech; in fact even emailed her principal stating I wanted to ensure she watched it live. I am disgusted by the people in this my Country who assert their children should not hear […]
THE FIRST WOMAN SENATOR FOR MASSACHUSETTS A KENNEDY May I be so bold – having now met Vickie Kennedy for the first time – sadly at her husband’s funeral, and admittedly by ‘virtual’ means only – I suggest the people of Massachusetts consider an invitation for this accomplished and gracious person to take the seat […]
Constituent says “I am a proud right-wing terrorist.” Congressman Herger answered “Amen, God Bless you there goes a great American”
At the meeting in Redding, a man stood up and identified himself as “a proud right-wing terrorist.” Instead of denouncing him, Congressman Herger called the man “a great American.” That’s outrageous — which is why the California Democratic Party is buying newspaper ads next week in the Mt. Shasta Herald and the Redding Searchlight, demanding that […]
Senator ted Kennedy, Democratic and American Hero passed away today. He will be remembered and sorely missed. May G-d bless his family, his friends and colleagues and all his constituents. A great man has left our world. For me its hard to imagine; this day that we mourn the passing of one of […]
How the Hate for 8 Hurt my Child… Before the California Court ruled I asserted in my blog “The fate of California’s same-sex marriage hangs in the balance, as the Justices prepare their ruling on the challenges to the validity of Proposition 8.” Now is has ruled and the impact is so egregious that the […]
This guy is nuts to think that smart people like me will be duped into believing there is any validity to statements such as this. If he was smart enough to land a seat in the Senate, I bet he does not even believe this crap himself. However he is one of many who simply […]
Today history was made, when race relations in America turned a critical corner, finally a dialogue at the highest level with its focus on the more important ‘P,’ “Profiling.” Prof. Gates -SGT. Crowley –President Obama art by Melanie Nathan
I just received an email addressed probably to all of President Obama’s supporters asking for support on health care. I am not lending my suupport to anything until I get the promised repeal of DOMA. As selfish as it sounds, I am sick of our community being taken for granted. Use us and then abuse […]
Philosophical embrace or shrewd political venture? Your comments!
I vowed never to quote Rush Limbaugh on my BLOG- sheez – cannot trust myself ever again : “Arlen Specter should take Megan and John McCain with him.” :)
I am not sure how many more WOW’s I can handle this month! This is another. The synchronicity in my mind is ALL about UAFA (Uniting American Families Act.) My determination to passage for UAFA selfishly limits me this month; so all I can say is one more vote closer to the demise of the Republican filibuster, especially on LGBT […]
