LGBTI Refugees Hurt by Trump Ban

The following from African HRC:

With a cruel stroke of his pen, Donald Trump on Friday suspended the U.S. refugee program.  This has stopped the admission of all refugees to the United States for four months, causing uncertainty and terror for the refugees who had already spent years being vetted for resettlement and who had finally achieved the opportunity to embark upon a new life in America, free of persecution.

This is especially onerous for the LGBT refugees who African HRC serves.

This week we have been inundated with requests for resources to include direct case management in the hope of reinstatement of travel and humanitarian support.

One such person, Della a trans woman, who after escaping arrests, torture and death threats in her home country, endured further severe beatings while in the refugee camp, where the straight refugee population often targets LGBTI refugees. Another is Harry who has to consider starting much of his process over again, expressing that he is too afraid to come to the U.S.A.  (Names changed for privacy)

Several refugees were ecstatic to be traveling to their new homes in the U.S. this week, but faced a terrifying disappointment when travel documents were revoked. All these people who have undergone arduous vetting and screening are again facing the unknown, an uncertainty that places them all at great physical risk, yet again.

This week African Human Rights Coalition took on several such cases where we are providing advocacy and humanitarian assistance. Some refugees are contemplating restarting a long portion of the process and so will require considerable support.

We are in great need of funds and ask for your help. Kindly consider donating as follows:
