‘THE VILLAGE VOICE PRIDE AWARDS’
The Village Voice Pride Awards to honor LGBTQ local and global heroes contributing to the community’s growth, at VIP gala, June 21
New York, NY—May 3, 2017—The Village Voice announced today the launch of ‘The Village Voice Pride Awards,’ which recognizes local and global heroes in the LGBTQ movement. The Village Voice Pride Awards will be the first award show to grace the official Pride Week calendar and The Village Voice will serve as the Official Media Sponsor for NYC Pride Week 2017.
Hosted by Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming, with a performance by Grammy-nominated artists to be announced at a later date, The Village Voice Pride Awards will take place June 21 with a VIP event at Capitale in New York City. Event details are now available at the Pride Awards dedicated Facebook page here: Facebook.com/VillageVoicePride
In addition to the awards ceremony, The Village Voice Pride Awards gala will feature a VIP cocktail reception. A silent auction will benefit Heritage of Pride, a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and commemorating New York City Pride.
“For over four decades, The Village Voice has been at the heart of New York City Pride,” said Peter Barbey, CEO of The Village Voice. “Now, we’re furthering this already deep commitment to the community by honoring the courage and creativity of the people whose work is advancing LGBTQ civil rights and social acceptance.”
“I’m so excited to be hosting the inaugural Pride Awards,” said Alan Cumming, host of the event. “Let’s not beat about the bush – we’re living in a time where all the strides we’ve made together as queer people are under threat. So, it couldn’t be more timely that The Village Voice – a longtime advocate for the community – raises its standard and proclaims anew how much we have to celebrate and be proud of.”
In addition to the Pride Awards, The Village Voice will dedicate the entire month of June to Pride, kicking off regular coverage of the community throughout the year. This initiative will launch via a dedicated Pride hub on VillageVoice.com complete with up-to-the-minute news as well as rich photo and video galleries. Weekly issues of The Village Voice will also feature content throughout the month of June leading up to a special Pride edition on June 21.
“Highlighting the city’s vibrant array of LGBTQ communities and the activists, organizers, artists, business leaders, and heroes who have fought to bring about positive change has always been integral to The Village Voice’s editorial mission,” said Stephen Mooallem, Editor in Chief of The Village Voice. “It’s an aspect of our coverage that we are committed to continuing and deepening through initiatives like the Pride Awards.”
The Village Voice has a storied history with NYC Pride and was one of the first publications to bring a pro- LGBT editorial stance onto the national stage decades ago. Since then, the ground-breaking publication has continually been at the forefront of New York’s Pride movement.
“We are proud to partner with The Village Voice in launching The Village Voice Pride Awards,” said Chris Frederick, Managing Director of NYC Pride. “Honoring local and international leaders within the LGBTQ community during NYC Pride Week is integral to NYC Pride’s commitment to celebrating dynamic voices within our community.”
The Official Media Partner of NYC Pride, The Village Voice kicks off a month of Pride with feature online coverage starting June 7 and a Special Issue, which launches June 21
