My children have two moms, lesbians! Yesterday my fifteen year old daughter and her friend called me into the bedroom, they were giggling; “What should we tell her mom? Not sure how to handle this, ” they queried.
The six year old was playing “Sims” on the computer and trying to make a baby with two women she had coupled.
Oh my why now? The question had not come up before this; the direct question of “how?”
But there was no escaping this, now was the time and what seemed easy was explaining to her how two woman had “made her” – yet what seemed difficult to explain was the fact that The SIMS had failed her, the game did not provide the option of a sperm bank.
So she asked if she could write them a letter on my Blog and I said yes:- These are her words completely with no input from me.
Dear Sims,
Whoever you are, you cant just make a boy and a girl. You can’t just do that. You can also make a girl and girl. Haven’t you ever heard that? If you have a boss tell them that immediately.
Why wont you put a sperm bank – email us back. Even my sister does this game a lot. I think you should have a girl and girl like real life.
AND my sister’s friend also tried to make twins but she does not know how, could you please email and blog about that.
This is it for today wait for my next Blog soon,
Love Pikachu”
You will notice she has guest blogged a few times under pseudonym Pikachu on my Kids Activist Page – with issues that she feels are important.
WHAT IS THE SIMS – http://thesims.com/en_us/what-is-the-sims
The Sims is a strategic life-simulation video game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. Its development was led by game designer Will Wright, also known for developing SimCity. It is a simulation of the daily activities of one or more virtual persons (“Sims”) in a suburban household near SimCity.
Ok- that is hilarious! Well, it is & it isn’t- they really DO need to update Sims to allow for same-sex couples in the game to have children (even adding adoption would be cool?)…
The other funny thing is that both my kids play & love the Sims (v2 on PC)- but while both made same-sex couples (yay!) neither of them ever made kids. When I asked, “why not?”, they both said that “kids are too much trouble”- lol… :)
My little one has a current obsession going with pregnancy – asking a LOT of questions and tapping into that mom feeling that I recall having when I was her age. Thanks for the input Tracy!
I want to add an important point for those on the hetero normative ONLY side of the fence -my six year old, just turned 7, has found her natural born femininity. She loves pink, pretty dresses, gets coy around boys and dives at blonde barbies on store shelves. This all without any influence by her moms. Her idea to couple the two women comes amidst other times on the Sims when she couples a man and a woman. Her path to sexuality is her own and I am happy that unlike so many of us, she has the opportunity to be what was intended for her, without judgment by parents……..
