I may have been seen to be silent as this is not an issue that OBLOGDEE tends to write about. However I have been somewhat vocal on social media. I personally think the shutdown of the U.S. government boils down to the racist Tea Party control of the Republican Party and the initial Mitch McConnel – Boehner and the henchman Ted Cruz playing Tea Party promise – to never work with the President – in other words a promise to ensure President Obama does not succeed or accomplish anything, regardless of the issue at hand.
At the beginning of the President’s first term Republicans vowed that this President would never succeed. How much more un-American can one be than that? And now they are messing with the lives of Americans to see that promise through. I do not believe this Republican shutdown of Government is about Obamacare – I believe its about hate and racism. I believe the Republicans will do anything to destroy Obama and that includes destroying the Americans who voted for him. And so what if there is collateral damage? Right? If this were not true then why is there no plan? Why have they boxed themselves into a corner.
Their contention and hence the equation:- We the Republicans shut down government = you the Democrats (and the President) are forced to change the Obamacare Law + If you don’t + we do not have a plan B = Death to America!
To me it feels like a civil war.
The Republicans made their first term anti-Obama vow which flies in the face of the very oath they took – to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Now they are holding the President and the American people hostage – using extortion to try and change a law that has already been passed and now must be implemented. An utter failure to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. Surely there must be some impeachment process when this conspiracy unravels? Numerous Congress representatives should be impeached.
Let 2014 and future voters decide.
Oh and while I am at it. The LGBT community should be NOW setting the goal for a FULL EQUALITY BILL – because it is a matter of time before the Democrats and hopefully a few more progressives added, are again in control of all 3- the House, the Senate and the Presidency. I reiterate my favorite Mandela quote – “We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always right to do right.”
Dear Melanie,
It is now day 12 of the GOP shutdown, and Republicans still aren’t budging.
Speaker Boehner and the tea party continue to hold the American people and their government hostage, all in their out-of-control effort to defund Obamacare. It’s outrageous.
The reckless GOP shutdown is hurting our economy, it’s hurting the hundreds of thousands of government workers who have been furloughed or are working without pay, and it’s hurting millions of American families who count on our federal government to be there when they need it.
More than 145,000 Americans have already signed our petition to Speaker Boehner, urging him to stop the shutdown by passing the Senate’s no-strings-attached budget bill right now. But we need you to add your name too — so we can make sure Speaker Boehner gets the message.
Sign this petition to stand with me and with my colleagues, Senators Boxer, Durbin, Harkin, Hirono, Landrieu, McCaskill, Murray, Reed, Schatz, and Udall: Tell Speaker John Boehner to bring the Senate-passed budget up for a vote and end this shutdown now.
If the GOP keeps this up, it’s only going to get worse.
Just days from now — as soon as October 17 — the U.S. Treasury will be unable to fully pay its bills and will default on our debt payments if Speaker Boehner and right-wing Republicans refuse to raise the debt ceiling.
A government shutdown is bad enough. But a federal government default? It’s unprecedented, and it would have catastrophic consequences for the U.S. economy — and indeed, the world economy.
Republican leaders in the House must stand up to the tea party — right now. It would only take one vote on the clean, Senate-passed budget to prevent this from happening.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator
