Other Religions are the Victims of Radical Christian County Clerk

“Ah- I am so sorry madam, I cant serve you today its against my religious beliefs to deal with your bacon breath!   I don’t want to put my signature on a piece of paper for the marriage of an non-kosher Goy!”

Screen Shot 2015-09-01 at 2.25.13 PMRowan County Clerk, Kentucky, Kim Davis has released a statement on her position regarding marriage license laws. Despite Court orders, all the way up to SCOTUS, the embattled County Clerk continues to refuse to issue marriage licenses to anyone, rather than have to provide such to same-sex couples. Its not about her inability to practice her religion – as she is depriving others of practicing theirs.  The problem comes when Christians think America is a Christian Nation. It is not! We follow civil law – not the law of any religion. So hey folks let us NOT make a martyr of her – because she aint the victim – the rest of us are! Gay or straight! She has stolen my religious freedom with the claim of hers!

To those who do not subscribe to the Christian religion or even those who do not interpret Christianity in the same way that Ms. Kim Davis does, the statement she made when trying to justify her refusal to do her job– seems like sheer lunacy. And it is precisely because this may seem like lunacy to some, while normal to others, that it becomes imperative to separate religious ideology from our lives in the civil realm – where any single one belief system cannot dictate all of our lives.

Here is what Davis noted in her attempted justification to disobey American law and her refusal to do a basic aspect of her civil job:

“I have worked in the Rowan County Clerk’s office for 27 years as a Deputy Clerk and was honored to be elected as the Clerk in November 2014, and took office in January 2015.  I love my job and the people of Rowan County. I have never lived any place other than Rowan County. Some people have said I should resign, but I have done my job well. This year we are on track to generate a surplus for the county of $1.5 million.

In addition to my desire to serve the people of Rowan County, I owe my life to Jesus Christ who loves me and gave His life for me. Following the death of my godly mother-in-law over four years ago, I went to church to fulfill her dying wish. There I heard a message of grace and forgiveness and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I am not perfect. No one is. But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God.

I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage. To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience. It is not a light issue for me. It is a Heaven or Hell decision. For me it is a decision of obedience. I have no animosity toward anyone and harbor no ill will. To me this has never been a gay or lesbian issue. It is about marriage and God’s Word.  It is a matter of religious liberty, which is protected under the First Amendment, the Kentucky Constitution, and in the Kentucky Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Our history is filled with accommodations for people’s religious freedom and conscience.  I want to continue to perform my duties, but I also am requesting what our Founders envisioned – that conscience and religious freedom would be protected. That is all I am asking. I never sought to be in this position, and I would much rather not have been placed in this position. I have received death threats from people who do not know me. I harbor nothing against them.  I was elected by the people to serve as the County Clerk. I intend to continue to serve the people of Rowan County, but I cannot violate my conscience.”

It seems that this County Clerk’s religion precludes her from functioning in her job and in a country where Christianity is not the law. She seems unable to perform in a job where she has to mix with people of all faiths and where all faiths are impacted by the very nature of her work.  You see some of our religions allow same-sex couples to marry.

Regardless of one’s faith, one is entitled to a civil law marriage license. It is under that civil law that one gets married – and the religious vows are quite separate. It is under the licensing of the marriage where one acquires serious civil rights and duties – for example, pertaining to taxes, deceased estates, dissolution of marriage, where issues like spousal support, custody and community property are addressed. We all share that realm – regardless of religion and therefor her denials to perform her job based on her religious belief should be an equal opportunity denial. Now she has closed down the licensing for all – holding us hostage to her beliefs.

It is clear Ms. Davis cannot function in this job. Unless of course she were to take a job where her Christianity does not stomp on the freedoms of others, she should reserve her career for Church work only.

Yes, she should resign and take a job in a Church!
America and its Federal and State offices are not governed by Christianity. We are NOT a Christian nation. And he statement has the audacity to suggest that we ought to be.  It is this very Tea Party trickery that will extend to Ms Davis the hero welcome of the politicians who await with open arms. We need THAT issue! Yes almost all 16 Republican Presidential candidates, many who would like to believe we are a Christian nation and some who would like to swap out our statutory law for Biblical law,  would love nothing more than a feathered and fired County Clerk who stood up to the activist judges.

Imagine if a devout Jew was Clerk at Rowan County, Kentucky-  oy vey!   He could refuse to issue a marriage license because he knows the applicant had bacon for breakfast, is wearing mixed clothe, and is simply not fit in his eyes to deserve such licence – and worse yet what if that person wants to marry and will do sexual acts with their spouse that he does not believe in: “Ah- I am so sorry madam, I cant serve you today its against my religious beliefs to deal with your bacon breath!   I don’t want to put my signature on a piece of paper for the marriage of an non-kosher Goy!”  How about the Muslim refusing to serve a woman at the counter because she does not wear a head cover:  “Ah sorry madam, please leave this office and when you come back with the appropriate head cover, I might serve you because that is what my religion says women should do… so toodles!”

Kim Davis’ right to practice her religion is fully protected in the USA. But she must understand it is not the ONLY religion. And to coexist she has to respect that my religion allows me to marry a member of the same–sex and in order to marry I need a license that she is supposed to issue so I can avail myself of the civil laws to which I am entitled.  Her dicta as so clearly reflected in her above statement means that when we as diverse people intersect on the issue – she believes her religious belief should take precedence over mine. That is hardly respecting religious freedom.

Her beliefs seem to cause her a serious dysfunction in the bigger realm where she is expected to mingle with a diverse array of humans, all with varying social norms, religions, cultures, belief systems, not to mention sexualities, races,  and gender identities.   While many religious Christians are well able to function in a balanced fashion taking jobs that may test them, they all realize that they are NOT living in a Christian country but one that is shared by many religions where we must all figure out how to coexist. That is one reason why we have civil laws  which apply to all of us equally and which do not rely on one religious group’s belief system.

Its time for Kim Davis to STFU and for the American LGBT media to stop participating in the sensationalizing of her – all we are doing is turning her into a cause celebrity for the lunacy of religious radicalism and a fuel for those political pimps waiting for their warm body.

Here is what we should do:

1) Walk away – get rid of the cameras – let her office continue to stop giving marriage licenses to everyone – lets watch her revenues drop and the rest of the fall  out!
2) Let the local legislature impeach/recall her when they reconvene – or perhaps call an early session – with behind the scenes and quiet lobbying and advocacy ensuring the result;
3) Whatever taxes are going to fund her office for the marriage license aspect of the work should be withdrawn/ordered repaid; and
4) If there is a punitive route then quietly fine her – do not place her in prison – after all she aint gonna be no Martyr – right?!

Watch the fallout as the revenues drop.

Watch the wedding industry in her area suffer – locals even on her side of the issue get angry.

And watch her fizzle into nothingness!

She will become the person who lost her job because she stood on my religion – not because I stood on hers!  And while she stood on my religion – she messed up the fiscal and functional viability of the office of rowan County Clerk.   Let us ensure we deny her the victim-hood she is trying to accomplish. Rather than helping her become the person who was forced out because we refused to allow her religious freedom, let us show it for exactly what it is- no martyr here – just a loser who cant run the office!

    An interesting perspective…

  2. I applaud your patience Melanie- but I think it’s time to have this nut moved to a safer place- like her jail cell- for contempt.

    Where’s the sheriff?

      1. Cool! Maybe they can fill her seat with someone ready to uphold the actual law- vs. trotting out their own, personal opinions- while she’s in the joint? We can only hope?

However, given the RWNJ slant, it’ll only make the idiot a martyr…I’m debating the decision to jail vs. fine.

        Your view?

Judge trying for an end to it all quickly, or biased judge building his martyr.

        I don’t know the area.
