Cape Town, South Africa join the march to help catch brutal rapist
By Melanie Nathan, January 19, 2013.
In 2010 I broke the story of the brutal rape of a lesbian in Gugulethu, a Township near Cape Town, in an article that went viral around the world, causing outrage, “The Face of Corrective Rape.” I followed the story, which shocked South Africa and the world, for over a year, as the victim was treated by authorities with great insensitivity, attending court date after court date, until finally a guilty verdict, but she and has yet to see justice. Now activists are conducting their own hunt while calling on police to take immediate action in this and many other cases involving so called “corrective rape,” endemic on South Africa.
Activists from the group Free Gender, are asking for the community to help hunt down the animal who failed to show up to his sentencing.
Milicent Gaika not only endured hours of unbearable torture in the incident of corrective rape, but was almost strangled to death by barbed wire. She survived the attack when neighbors broke down the door to rescue her and caught the attacker, Andile Ngcoza, while he was strangling her
Andile Ngcoza, 43, who was released on less then $60 bail, wanted to “show the lesbian that she was a woman,” is extremely brutal and dangerous. In fact at the time of his bail, pending his verdict, he would continue to taunt his victim as well as other lesbians who had been helping her at the time.
A protest and action march to find Andile Ngcoza has been planned: “We are encouraging the community to let the police know when they see him or let me know.” said Funeka Soldaat of the organization FreeGender. On the 2nd February 2013 a large group of ativists will be walking from Luzuko township robots, (traffic lights,) Symphony Way to Gugulethu Police Station to hand over a memorandum demanding justice. “We believe that if the were serious they would have arrested this person longtime ago,” noted Soldaat.
The call is for as many people to show up as possible and for hose who will not be walking to assist with water and fruits. The distance is estimated to be 5km. The walk will start at 7am.
I was able to find this picture from an old article I had written about the case. I hope this will help catch Andile Ngcoza. Please help spread this around South Africa so he will be caught and Milicent Gaika will receive justice and a community peace of mind.
NOTE: Andile Ngcoza may be in Paarl outside Cape town but in same Province or TR section in SiteB Khayelitsha. The 4/5hrs walk for justice is to put pressure to police to arrest him and also a call for justice for all the outstanding and neglected cases in Nyanga cluster.
The march start just out side Khayelitsha, from Luzuko, Phillipi East to Guguletu police station.
My original Article can be found here: “This is the face of a warrior who despite all odds, trauma, and police victimization, found her way to Court today by public transportation, to testify against her brutal attacker, who remained free on bail …. http://oblogdeeoblogda.me/published/
NOTE IF ANYONE HAS SEEN WANTED RAPIST Andile Ngocza or has information that can lead to his arrest, PLEASE CONTACT GUGULETHU POLICE 021 -684-1530 –
OR send an email to [email protected] and I will connect you to the right person or I will take the information and keep your identity confidential.
programs like isidingo promote corrective rape; so
its hardly possible to end this struggle.
They portrayed a lesbian relationship, one of the
girls got raped and shortly ended her lesbian
relationship and is now currently with a male. So
how do we fix this problem if award winning programs promote corrective rape?
Well someone needs to reeducate isidingo – please make sure you complain to SA GLAAD about the program. Ask people to write letters complaining to the program. AND if it is really bad – I have not seen it, complain to the Constitutional Court.
