Members of the entertainment industry and technology giants are reacting to the new Indiana law which condemns LGBT people to certain discrimination.
Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed by a strong majority in the legislature, and signed today by Indiana Governor Mike Pence, despite pleas from the business industry to refrain. The law allows people of all faiths to bring so called ‘religious freedom claims’ while stomping on the civil rights of lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people.
Below are screen shots of Audra McDonald, Tony award winning Broadway star and a letter written by Tech giants, Salesforce, CloudOne, Clear Software, and others.
Today Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce made good on his threats by tweeting:
“Today we are canceling all programs that require our customers/employees to travel to Indiana to face discrimination.”
Social media is ablaze with reaction. Let us know yours. Please watch this page as we continue to add statements and boycott news.
UPDATED: 10.00PM 3/26/2015:
In a further indictment on the Governor and State of Indiana, for their homophobic law, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has issued a public statement forbidding city employees from using public funds to travel to the state of Indiana, unless of course there were some public health or safety issue:
“We stand united as San Franciscans to condemn Indiana’s new discriminatory law, and will work together to protect the civil rights of all Americans including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, he said. “Effective immediately, I am directing city departments under my authority to bar any publicly funded City employee travel to the State of Indiana that is not absolutely essential to public health and safety. San Francisco taxpayers will not subsidize legally-sanctioned discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people by the State of Indiana.”
Please all #LGBT need to understand these RFRA laws were written by same RW group.. THEY do not specify #lgbt ..BUT, in fact, allow anyone to discriminate against anyone else for anything.. Got it ? For orientation, for gender. For skin color, for religion, for language, for ethnicity! So wake up to that … And then note how lazy activists in Indiana were not to do this.
Remember This One Folks…IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM in #OKLAHOMA YES TY Rep Emily Virgin…. ‘If a business wants to discriminate against #lgbt or #black or #muslim or #Jewish people then it must advertise the fact in advance, says a Democratic member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives
‘If you want to discriminate under this law if it passes, then you’re legally allowed to do that, but you need to own it. You need to fess up to it,’ Rep. Virgin told kfor.com.
Yesterday, it was announced that the bill has stalled. House leadership did not take up the proposal for discussion. For it to return to the House, it would need to be added to another bill, but Virgin has indicated that if that happens, she would act again.
