Author, media pundit, journalist Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller, were amongst the first couples to obtain marriage licenses in Seattle today, in a same-sex marriage license opening ceremony held at the King County Administrative building, officiated by County Executive Dow Constantine.
Savage and Miller have been previously married in Canada; can one get married more than once? Would Washington State not recognize Savage’s already marital status under this new marriage law? Maybe a publicity stunt for Savage as he jumped the line and joined the ten selected special “first” applicants. Savage was not on the original list of selected history makers. Certainly not according to the Press release which we received.
Hundreds of couples lined up to be amongst the first to obtain marriage licenses. Marriages will start officially on Dec 09.
Savage writes the internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love. Its tone is frank in its discussion of sexuality, often humorous, and hostile to social conservatives and Rick Santorum’s views on homosexuality. Savage has clashed with cultural conservatives on the right, and the gay establishment, on the left. He has also worked as a theater director, both under his real name and under the name Keenan Hollahan, using his middle name and his grandmother’s maiden name. In 2010, Savage and his partner Terry Miller began the It Gets Better Project to help prevent suicide among LGBT youth.
