Even though Turkish security forces yesterday unleashed water cannons to break up a peaceful march in commemoration of those who were killed in the recent Turkish uprising, by all accounts available, Istanbul’s Trans Pride Parade today continued unaffected and was a huge success!
There had been a lot of concern since the Turkish government had banned activities in and around the Taksim Gezi Park area, where the parade was set to happen.
But today it was all sunshine and happiness. At least so far and with the view from live streaming and twitter pics.
In what can be interpreted as a solidarity action of all forms of resistance in Turkey, Capulcu TV is reporting (English translation by Bing with corrections):
This year the 4th ‘duration for the Trans Pride March brought tens of thousands to Taksim Square. In a speech before the march, Lawyer Eren Keskin, ” It is an honor for me to be with you on this march. Feminists and homosexuals, bless them against the patriarchal system,” he said.
Individuals against Transphobia, homophobia, and bi-phobia and LGBT individuals marched together ………. then marched to the Tunnel. The march included the Taksim Resistance for LGBT individuals referenced with slogans such as “Taksim homosexuals are with you”, “Direct Ankara homosexuals with you”, “Every place in Taksim all resistance”. Kurdish and Turkish, “Bread, freedom and justice” included homosexuals marching behind the banner by colorful costumes, musical instruments and dances attracted considerable attention.
