A Poem for Uganda and The Anti-Homosexuality Bill

By Melanie Nathan, December 16, 2012.

Screen Shot 2012-12-16 at 5.58.38 PMA fellow campaigner for the human rights of LGBTI people, Richard Willmer, has been following the saga of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill (AHB, a.k.a. Bahati Bill or the ‘Hang-the-Gays’ Bill) in Uganda since the Bill broke cover in late 2009, as it continues its journey and various parliamentary incarnations. Richard Willmer has many Ugandan friends, some of them gay and most of them not, comments from some of whom have inspired his short poem:

THE ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY BILL, 2009/10/11/12 …

Here it comes,
There it goes:
Round and round and round.
Now you see it,
Now you don’t;
Perhaps it is just sound
And fury that is meant to be
Distraction for a people ground
By war and graft and poverty.
